Quiet Orchid
the lilac an orchid keeps for itself after the flower shop closes

After closing time in a flower shop, when the lamps go down and the orchids stop performing, they keep a lilac they never show under the shop lights. Cooler, quieter, a little grey at the edges: the color of a flower resting. We saw it through the glass one evening with the shutters half down, and it was the first tone we found for the second collection before the first one had even shipped.

Lilac is a difficult color to keep from turning sweet. Most of the swatches so far have been the lilac of a greeting card, or of a bathroom, and neither of those is the flower at rest. We would rather arrive late with the right one than on time with a bright one, so Quiet Orchid opens Noeul whenever the cotton agrees, and not before.
